AWAKE THOU THAT SLEEPEST

TOPIC: AWAKE THOU THAT SLEEPEST

TEXT: EPHESIANS 5:14 :-  Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

INTRODUCTION

SLEEP is a natural and periodic state of rest during which consciousness of the world is suspended. During sleep the physical body is re-energized. Hence it serves a useful purpose. Sleep is also used as a symbol of death in many places in the Bible.

2Samuel 7:12 :- And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.

1Kings 2:10 :- So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.

We will examine sleep in its two board types; Natural and Spiritual.

1.       NATURAL SLEEP

This form of sleep is a gift from God. Lack of it can lead to sickness and lack of concentration. At the same time there are also severe consequences if we indulge in too much sleep.

psalm 127:2 :- is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows:  for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

Jeremiah 31:26

Proverbs 6:9-11

Proverbs 20:13.

2.       SPIRITUAL SLEEP

This signifies the state of the natural man in its unsaved state. It is deep sleep of the soul that makes it insensitive to his condition or his environment. He is in a state of darkness and he is not conscious of sin or evil, typified by false prophets or modern day Pharisees; the blind leading the blind. Believers’  also may  fall into spiritual sleep from time to time.

Matthew 26:41-43 :- Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation:  the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.   42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.   43 And he came and found them asleep again:  for their eyes were heavy.

Matthew 6:23

Luke 18:11-12

Ezekiel 13:9-10

Jeremiah 6:14-15

Matthew 23:5-7

Amos 6:1.

3.       AWAKE.

This is the time for believers to watch and pray as commanded by Jesus Christ as we live in the very perilous times. God has promised to give to believers light. We should avoid every work of darkness in whatever disguise. I pray we shall not be asleep spiritually.

Mark 13:35-36 :- Watch ye therefore:  for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:  36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

1Thessalonians 5:6 :- Therefore let us not sleep, as do others;  but let us watch and be sober.

Romans 13:11

Isaiah 60:1-3

Ephesians  5:14
