KIDNESS IN THIS TRYING TIME

 KINDNESS IN THIS TRYING TIME

Do you ever pause and step aside from the pressure of this challenging period in our socioeconomic polity to consider for a moment who God is and what he is like, what do you think? If you were to be asked “what dose God delight in?” what would be your answer?

Are you aware of this verse in Jeremiah 9:23-24 “let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on the earth, for in these I delight.”

In them we see a God who delights in exercising kindness, justice and righteousness on the earth. One can’t help but be struck by the fact that God delights in exercising kindness. If we are asked to pick things that God delighted in, we would probably pick justice and righteousness, but would we have considered kindness?

That should get us thinking that, as we strive to know and understand God better, as we seek to serve him and respond to his call, do we exercise kindness to those around us; do we delight in it? Do we take pleasure in it; does it make us happy from the inner part of our being? When you are performing your secular or kingdom duties, do you delight in showing kindness to fellow brethren, spouse, children and relatives? What about your colleagues or that neighbour you consider awkward? Do you exercise kindness towards them too?

Yes, God had gone ahead and prepare the widow who cared for the great Prophet Elijah during the famine but do you know she was a ready vessel; that is she was already a kind and giving person hence God knew no matter the odds against her and her son, she wouldn’t refuse His Prophet a morsel of food. In the end, she was altogether the better for it. 1kings 17:8-16. Even the rich shunammite woman was use to provide abode and substance for Prophet Elisha. She too, was a ready vessel already containing kindness and giving. At the end, she got three awesome miracles – 2Kings 4:8-37 and 2Kings 8:1-6. Don’t be cowed by the seeming economic realities into forgetting kindness. God is the source from which all good things flows. If we know and understand God, we too will seek to exercise kindness, justice and righteousness. It may be challenging now but we do not do it alone; we have God’s help and guidance.

NOTE: kindness is a commandment from God – Zach 7:9 Thus says the Lord of host…show kindness to your brother.

When a man withholds kindness from a friend, colleague, relative, neighbour; etc. he forsakes the fear of the almighty - Job 6:14. It is good for us to understand that God is the source of every good thing we possess; so don’t withhold kindness from people/friends; rather constantly seek for whom you will show kindness to because that is the secret of fulfilment in life - 2Sam 9:7

Spare a moment today to pray for others, especially Christians as they seek to reflect God’s delight in kindness, justice and righteousness through their interactions with fellow brethren, relatives and the general public. Pray that people may respond to the kindness shown to them and recognise that, at the root, is a God who loves and cares for all and who delight in exercising kindness.
